Information
(nominated by Juneau Projects) “We chose to nominate Mark for two reasons. First, and foremost, we like the work he makes: his work is constantly evolving and involving, mining a rich stream that straddles the nostalgic reverence of a teenage metal fan and the social observation of George A. Romero. Secondly, he’s a great guy and a good friend.” (Juneau Projects) “I grew up through the 80’s in a seaside town and my cousin introduced me to Iron Maiden when I was 8 years old – these have remained major influences on my practice. I have a particular interest in work that brings together audiences from different cultural standpoints, both of whom want to interact with the work for different reasons. The posters look at the volatile relationship between rock music and the church, appropriating the visual language of one and applying it to the sentiments of the other. The sound piece is a fictitious radio show presented by an evangelical Deep South American preacher whose ‘teachings’ consist of a script made up entirely of song lyrics.” S Mark Gubb
